1. Hill Climbing
That may sound obvious, but it's the primary advantage. A good electric bike effectively flattens hills, increasing your average speed and eliminating the 'groan' factor when a gradient comes into view. Provided you supply a reasonable amount of effort, you can expect to climb hills of 1 in 10 (10%) on an electric bike with ease, and clear a maximum gradient of 1 in 7 (14%), or much more. In hilly country, the effect is nothing short of miraculous.

2. Safety
It sounds unlikely, doesn't it? But the mathematics is compelling. Think of a steep and busy road, with cars climbing at 30mph. If you previously slogged up the hill at 6mph, but can tackle the same gradient at 12mph with an electric bike, you will see 33% fewer cars, and they will pass you at 18mph rather than 24mph. Or at least, we think that's correct.

Whatever the figures, there's no doubt that an electric bike helps to keep you out of danger. The same general principle applies to road junctions - the faster your acceleration, the sooner you can get out of trouble. And with no need to rush the hills, you won't be tempted to ride downhill at breakneck speed... another useful safety feature.

3. Personal Fitness
Surely a conventional bike will keep you fitter? That, of course, depends how much - if at all - you use it. Research (b) has found that 46% of conventional bikes are used only once or twice a week, with a further 30% being used once a fortnight or even less. By contrast, a recent survey of electric bicycle owners reveals that a third ride their bike at least once a day and 81% use the bike at least once a week (c).

The figures confirm our experience that an electric bike typically gets used at least twice as often as a conventional machine.

Because riding an electric bike is a great deal more enjoyable in hilly country, into strong winds, or when carrying heavy loads, users tend to make better use of them. The motor provides up to half the effort, but more regular use means more exercise for the rider.

4. No Sweat!
Sweat may not be a serious issue when you're out for a leisure ride, but it's more important if you're cycling to work. Although some employers are rather grudgingly providing showers and other facilities for cyclists, the great majority have no intention of doing so. An electric bike eliminates the problem at source. In hot weather, it's possible to maintain a normal schedule by transferring a bit more load to the electric motor. In colder weather - or if you feel in need of exercise - just throttle back, or turn the motor off.

5. Clean & Green

Electric bikes obviously consume energy, where a conventional bikes does not (provided we ignore the environmental cost of growing and processing food - see below). However, the amount of energy used is very small compared to a moped, motorcycle or car. Besides fuel, the only consumables are the batteries, and these can normally be recycled when life-expired. As for energy use, electric bikes typically consume fuel at an average rate of 100 to 150 watts of electrical energy, against 15,000 or so for a car (admittedly travelling much faster). In terms of fuel consumption, an electric bike achieves about 800-2,000mpg (290 - 700 litres/kilometre) (d). No other commercially available vehicle can match figures of this kind.


If it's hard to place these numbers in your own lifestyle, think of a 100 watt electric light bulb burning for an evening - that's enough energy to propel an electrically-assisted bike for 20 to 40 miles...

6. Genuinely Sustainable
There's a lot of nonsense talked about sustainability in transport, but an electric bicycle can be made genuinely sustainable. Purchase electricity from a 'green' supplier, or generate your own with a roof-mounted windmill or solar panel array (see Solar Power facts), and the vehicles' fossil fuel consumption will be zero. Surely a conventional bike does that already? Only if you grow the food you consume whilst riding it. Unfortunately, most modern food production and distribution is so fuel-intensive that the consumption of a typical cyclist is not terribly good.

7. Faster travel
In theory a car can average a high speed, but in practise speed often falls below 10mph in cities. The problem is congestion - motorcycles get around this to some extent, but they're still confined to the road network. An electric bike can maintain a higher average speed than a bicycle but take advantage of the same network of cycle facilities, giving access to routes that cars and motorcycles cannot reach. The result is often a faster door-to-door journey time than any other mode. And by taking advantage of the uncongested cycle network, but eliminating hills and headwinds, electric bikes are often the most consistent mode of travel.

8. High Resale Value
Electric bikes are new technology, and it's early days yet, but the evidence points to a much better resale value than a conventional bike. True, a typical electric bike costs more to buy, at £400-£1,000, but it seems you'll get most of that back if you sell the machine on.

9. Motorised, Without The Red Tape!
You know how it is... MOT due, log book missing, insurance costs rising year on year. Electric bikes are treated just like ordinary bicycles for legislative purposes, so there's absolutely no registration or legislation to worry about. You are of course free to insure the machine if you wish, but there's no compulsion to do anything but enjoy yourself!

Transformer Bumble Bee 16 inch Bike

The Transformer Bumble Bee 16 inch kids bike is quickly becoming the most popular toy of the summer. I am going to surprise my son in a couple of weeks when he completes school. I recently picked up one from ebay.com. The entire process was easier than I thought. I was not even a member of ebay but when I found out that they had the best deals, I signed right up. The scooter is great for my 3 and 5 year old. The only issue was shipping. The boxes arrived extremely damaged and missing parts. Razor Pocket Mod Miniature Euro Electric Scooter

When my 11-year old started begging for an electric scooter, we were very hesitant. A neighbor has one and it's the stand-up kind with a VERY loud motor that drives us nuts on the weekends. We gave in, and went shopping. While we were reviewing the standing scooter, we noticed the Razor Pocket Mod and it was the SAME PRICE! I, of course, thought it was adorable and my daughter was easily swayed.

It was easy to put together and charge, however pumping the tires was a wee bit difficult just because of the angle required. The tires are nice and fat/sturdy, too, so riding offroad or over small rocks wasn't an issue. The biggest thing we noticed though, was that it is AMAZINGLY QUIET! What a blessing compared to the neighbor's noisy scooter! It practically 'purrs' and you don't even hear it until you are right next to it.

Seeing her ride it is incredible! It is VERY easy for any child that can balance and ride a bike. The handle brakes/gas takes a bit of getting used to, but after a few days she was a pro! Her papa rides a motorcycle, so he was dying to check it out. Weighing in about 180lbs, he was able to ride it as well! My daughter got a big kick out of that.

The battery lasts quite a while! An hour may not sound like a lot of time, but if it's not continuous (kids stop/start chat/ride/play) it can last hours. It charges quickly and easily, and it's small and fits well in the side of the garage. Though she's 11, we were told by the salesman that younger kids who are responsible can definitely ride it.

It IS fast, though, which was a bit unnerving at first. It doesn't sound like 15 MPH is that fast (I think that's what it is), but when you see your child going down a hill that fast - it seems quite scary! It doesn't turn quite as sharply as a bike or standing scooter can, so they have to learn it's limitations. Definitely get a helmet and kneepads!

Older Technologies in Electric Bicycle Batteries
Many electric bikes today use sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries, which are older technology but much lower in cost. But you get what you pay for. There are problems with 'going cheap' with these batteries:
• Long charge time - Up to 8 hours.
• Short cycle life - Good for up to 300 recharges, they need to be replaced every 12 months.
• Extremely toxic pollution produced by the used battery
• Heavy in weight - Increasing the load will decrease the life expectancy
Keep you're electric bike as light as possible! These low cost electric bicycles will cost you in the long run in additional batteries.
Some electric bicycle brands use a Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery, which are lighter, with a high energy density, both important for an electric bicycle. Their life is longer than the SLA, at 400 - 600 recharges. But this battery has shortcomings:
• They lose performance in cold conditions.
• They have a reputation for suffering from memory effect
• This technology is no longer state-of-the-art, so the cost of replacement batteries can be high.
Better Electric Bike Batteries
The state-of-the-art in electric bicycle battery technology is the lithium ion (or Li-ion) battery. We all use lithium-ion batteries in our cell phones, laptops, PDA's, and other appliances. Lithium ion batteries have powered consumer electronic devices for years, but their use in electric bicycles is fairly new. In electric bikes, the Li-ion batteries have these advantages:
• They are lightweight, easy to recharge using a standard electric outlet, and are more portable. Most li-ion batteries are 70 percent lighter and about 50 percent smaller than cheaper, bulkier batteries used in some electric bicycles.
• The rechargeable lithium ion batteries in electric bicycles enable these vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 20 mph for a range as high as 40 miles.
• The batteries are low-maintenance and can be recharged for only pennies a day. This makes an electric bicycle with a lithium ion battery a real bargain in a time of rising gasoline prices.
• They can take a few bumps, and a wise choice if you are going to be riding off-road.
So do these batteries have any problems? Well, yes: the price. The li-ion can be expensive up front, but the battery is good quality, with a long life. The Lithium Ion battery is well worth the additional cost in the longer term.
So choose your battery wisely. Buy the better battery.
